‘The Hunger Games’ workout: survival of the fittest

THIS STORY APPEARED IN Boston Articles

  • Boston Sports Clubs The Hunger Games cross-training will weave survival skills such as archery, climbing, speed, and strength into the workout.

Plenty of films roll out with promotional tie-ins these days, whether it’s a McDonald’s Happy Meal toy giveaway or an H&M fashion line based on “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.’’

But not many movies inspire a competitive, and perhaps even slightly combative, workout routine. Prepare yourself for “The Hunger Games’’ workout, a high-intensity cross-training class, coming to Boston Sports Clubs.

“I’m a huge ‘Hunger Games’ fan,’’ said BSC trainer Fawn Cronin, who will hold classes at the Davis Square location through April. “It’s going to be intense. I cannot wait to teach this.’’

Intense, indeed. “The Hunger Games’’ revolves around a fight-to-the-death reality show televised in a dark and distant future, where teenagers are chosen at random to represent their home districts. They win or they die.

No one’s saying that the workout based on the story will be anything like that. But the survival skills the players in the book and film employ — climbing, archery, speed, strength, even strategy — are all woven into the workout.

Drills include “Katniss Kickbacks,’’ “Peeta Presses,’’ even a “Sprint to the Cornucopia,’’ all named for characters or events in the best-selling young adult book series. Think of it as a nice break from the predictability of the elliptical machine.

Tribute Training: Coming To A Gym Near You!

March 20, 2012 at 1:54:00 PM by Emily Laurence1 Comments

NYSCWant to find out if you'd survive The Games while getting an awesome workout in the process? New York Sports Club is offering free (!) "Train Like A Tribute" workout classes in select cities starting March 27, 2012. I volunteered to test out the class for Seventeen, and I have a newfound respect for Katniss and the rest of The Hunger Games tributes. The class is an interactive way to interval train and works your entire body.

When I got to the class, I was told to leave my water bottle outside. Lucky tributes would be "gifted" water and energy bars during the class. Each person was assigned a district and at the start of the class we had to sprint toward a cornucopia of athletic supplies: an archery bow, free weights, workout mat, a weight plate, and a towel. Super speedy tributes sprinted back to the cornucopia to grab a bottle of water, but not everyone was so lucky.

After collecting our workout weapons, the instructors led the class in intense intervals. We used the archery bow to strengthen our arms ("Katniss Killers"), the mat and weight plate to tone our core by doing "Capitol crunches", "jabber jay jacks" a.k.a. jumping jacks, and "Peeta presses" (lifting the free weights up and to the side). The instructors let the tributes do the intervals at their own speed, and whoever did the most intervals during the class would be declared the winner of the Games.

The playlist for the class includes songs like "Save Me", by Evanescence, "What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger", by Kelly Clarkson, "It's The End of The World As We Know It" by R.E.M., "Battlefield", by Jordin Sparks and "Safe And Sound" by Taylor Swfit — to name a few.

During the class, there were surprise attacks and everyone had to protect themselves by doing specific exercises chosen by the instructors, like bear climbing. At the end of the 45-minute class, my arms were quivering from shooting the bow so many times, but I felt great. I'll definitely be continuing my tribute training!

To find a class in your area, go to mysportsclubs.com. The class is free for both NYSC members and non-members.
